February in Review - Status of all things nemu*nemu & me ★
Another full month has flown by — where does the time go??! — and it’s time for a recap of how things have fared in the month of February.
Here’s where we left off in January:
At the end of January, I made a post to Facebook that the comic had earned $165 from Amazon affiliate sales and membership donations — which roughly equalled $13 per update.
I am totally thankful I am earning any sort of money from this comic, but that’s a lot of hard work for roughly $3.25 an hour.
Combining slow merchandise sales and high expenses, I’ve pulled out of all out-of-state events and halted production of new merchandise to run things pretty lean this year.
I’m not going to lie — I’ve felt pretty paralyzed by self-doubt these past couple years.
I don’t believe I make a terrible product, but rather fear there isn’t a sustainable audience for the work I create. Particularly, online.
I’ve moved from crafting items that are comic-specific to “for a general audience” and confused people with just what nemu*nemu means. Is this a comic or is this a brand? Early on, I thought I could do both, but the more time I spent crafting “stuff”, the less time I had to dedicate to improving everything to do with my comic.
So this year, I’ve focused back on making a good, compelling story. I’m changing up some of the “rules” I set for myself and evolving the mythology that is nemu*nemu. The change has been scary for me — but I’m thankful that you folks have been commenting alongside the story and checking back for the new updates. It’s a great boost for my confidence and encourages me to keep pushing forward. ♥So how did we do in February?
I actually didn’t keep track of the numbers, nor tally them up until March. It’s not that I wasn’t curious, but I’ve been pretty preoccupied with the comic, spring time event prep, taxes, and health issues (more on that later. Ugh.)
This is a huge jump from the January total, and I was blown away! This means I’m earning roughly $35 per comic update! (I’m earning close to minimum wage! ★!)
There was a big boost in donations and a handful of renewed annual memberships that really helped raise the numbers. Lots of Amazon purchases, big and small, with our affiliate links this month too!My first goal?
I’d really like to earn about $50 an update or roughly $600 a month. It’s the lower end pay for a printed comic strip and should allow me to start putting some money into my savings again.
When I can hit that goal, I’ll start preparations to launch a kickstarter to print volume 7 with some ambitious stretch goals. ★
As for my health?
As I mentioned above, I’ve been having some health issues — this time, it’s my lower back. No trauma or damage to the area, but probably from a combination of muscle strain and bad posture, I’ve been having terrible back pain and it’s starting to affect my work.
First I had trouble bending and squatting, then a lot of discomfort when sitting for long period of time. Mid-month, I bought a folding table to put on top of my work desk to convert my workstation to a standing desk. This is what it looks like now:
About a week ago, things got unbearable and I went to see my doctor. He sent me to physical therapy — which is what I’m currently undergoing right now.
I currently can’t sit for longer than 10 minutes without pain radiating throughout my back. To “reset” things, I find I have to rest for at least an hour and then go thru my stretching routine that takes about 20 minutes to complete.
I think I’m spending more of my day stretching and resting than working. =_=;; It’s really frustrating, but I try to get as much done before my legs tire out.
So after I complete this story, I’ll be taking a break from nemu*nemu. Primarily to heal my back, but I’ll also be focusing my attention on other projects and a few upcoming events… and possibly that Kickstarter in April.… and no worries. I think there’s about another month-worth of updates to complete this story.
How can you help meet the $600 goal to unlock that kickstarter? All digital sales from the e-shop - books and wallpapers - count towards the goal!
